Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT does an appraiser provide?

The appraiser will provide an appraisal report that expresses their opinion of value. Commonly an appraisal report is delivered as an official document. The appraiser's opinion of value will be supported by market research and sale comparables. The format and level of detail of the report will be tailored to the purpose of the assignment.

What kinds of things can be appraised?

Sims Appraisal provides services to clients needing valuations for tangible personal property. Tangible personal property is any item that is subject to ownership and not classified as real property (real estate).

Common categories of tangible property that people have appraised include:

  • Antiques
  • Books
  • Collectibles (Cards, comics, coins, dolls, figurines, stamps, trains)
  • Cultural Artifacts
  • Decorative Art (ceramics, glasswork, metalwork, textiles)
  • Fine Art (drawings, paintings, photography, prints, sculptures)
  • Firearms
  • Fossils
  • Furniture
  • Luxury Goods (couture, jewelry, purses, shoes, watches)
  • Memorabilia (pop culture, sports)
  • Minerals
  • Musical Instruments
  • Oddities & Curiosities (equipment, specimens, taxidermy)
  • Vehicles (automobiles, boats, motorcycles)
  • Wine & Spirits

This list is not exhaustive and there is an abundance that won't fit into these categories. The key takeaway here is that many things people own can be appraised and given a value.

What if an item is outside of our specialty?

If the appraiser finds that they are unfamiliar with an item, then they will  identify an expert who has the appropriate knowledge to support a valuation and will collaborate or contract to competently execute the assignment.

DOES EVERYTHING HAVE A VALUE?

Unfortunately, no. An item may be regarded as having no value if there is no demonstrated market demand for the object. There are many things people possess that have decorative and sentimental value to their owners that cannot be assigned values for exchange.
